Stena Line is one of the world’s leading freight and passenger ferry operators with a workforce of 6000, and serves 23 destinations in Europe. These include ports in Scandinavia, Great Britain, Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands and the Baltic States. The company is focussing on growth in freight transport, specifically containers and unaccompanied trailers. To expand its route portfolio Stena Line recently acquired five Baltic Sea freight routes from another operator. These developments are expected to significantly increase volume and revenues.

This focus has inspired a new, centralised, approach to managing their fleet of terminal tractors, and standardising on one type to increase efficiency and reduce the management effort. After a thorough study to determine the requirements of all their terminals, Stena Line issued a tender for the

supply of up to 110 tractors. The Total Cost of Ownership was a key selection criterion. Following a thorough assessment of the bids and discussion of numerous details the company selected Terberg RT223 4x4 RoRo tractors. These will be supplied to the 14 terminals in Northern Europe under a framework agreement and there is also a catalogue of accessories tailored to Stena Line’s operations. The framework agreement provides clear information to all the terminals about the cost of the equipment, to help them optimise their investment decisions.

Delivery of the first tractors to terminals in Denmark, Norway and Sweden has already started. These units are leased from N.C. Nielsen/Terberg Scandinavia who are also responsible for servicing them. This arrangement gives Stena Line complete certainty about the operating costs.

After that, more RTs will be delivered to the terminals in the Baltic region, the Netherlands, the UK and Ireland.
