The 750 Competizione was the result of the collaboration between Alfa Romeo and Carlo Abarth, which started in 1955 with the goal of building a Sport barchetta for the 1.5 litre category with mechanics derived from the Giulietta: the aluminium ‘twin-shaft’ was taken to 1488cc, while Abarth designed a ‘mixed’ chassis in cast metal sheet and tubular structures. Extremely light, it was however too flexible and was discarded by Alfa’s technicians who, in the attempt to make it more robust, made it excessively heavy. One of the two prototypes would remain unfinished, but the second, which had a streamlined Boano body, was restored: its 145 HP, released at a record 8000 rpm, pushed the 690 Kg barchetta to a speed of more than 220 Km/h.
